A Goal Setting Guide

Focusing.

Can you imagine being an Elephant trainer, and walking your Elephant through a busy market stall. The Elephant would be moving his trunk to and fro. First grabbing an Apple, putting it in his mouth. Then an Orange, then a bun. It would be chaos. The wise trainer would give him a tiny stick to curl his trunk around. Why? Because it focuses him. Ever been driving in a car, and stuck your arm out in the sunshine? What happens? Not much. But focus the same sun rays with a magnifying glass, and you can burn wood. Ever done that? Modern technology can concentrate light into a focused beam that can laser through steel! This is the power of focusing. Do you procrastinate? We all do. Is it easier to procrastinate, than to hit the things you fear head on?

Know Thyself.

"Know Thyself" was important enough to the ancient Greeks, to inscribe it into the forecourt of the ancient temple of Apollo, at Delphi. Do you know yourself? Think of the different moods you have. Take bliss. How do you get into a state of bliss? Can you remember when you were last in that state? How was your posture? What were you thinking? What words were you using in your self talk? What images were in your thoughts? Were they bright? Dim? Were they close to you, or far away! Were you in the image, or a spectator? What was your breathing pattern? All these components formed your strategy for ecstacy, and can be replicated, again and whenever you need. Similarly, when were you last depressed? Can you remember? Can you put yourself back into that moment? Can you remember the strategy you used to depress yourself? How was your posture? You really can run your self the way you want. To believe that we are at the hands of fate is wasting your time, and will not move you any closer to your goals. Far better to realise that we are in fact in control of our destiny, and take stock of your hot buttons, because that makes you master of your own ship.

Stress.

I was listening to a gardening talk show on the radio. There was a panel of experts, and an audience of participants to fire questions. This elderly lady fired of the question of " Why does my clemantine tree not bear fruit?" The answer was that "Citrus trees bloom and fruit because of stress. In tropical climates, the stress is produced by the dry season. After the dry season has passed, the rainy season begins and the citrus tree blooms." Important parallel to draw here. Life is not a bed of Roses. As John Denver said, "Some days are diamonds, some days are Gold." In our goal setting and actualization, sometimes it may seem hopeless. I would like to re-produce a poem. Its called, don't quit.

Don't Quit.

When things go wrong as they sometimes will.
When the road you're trudging seems all up hill.
When funds are low and the debts are high.
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh.
When care is pressing you down a bit.
Rest, if you must, but don't you quit.
Life is queer with its twists and turns.
As everyone of us sometimes learns.
And many a failure turns about.
When he might have won had he stuck it out:
Don't give up though the pace seems slow -
You may succeed with another blow.
Success is failure turned inside out -
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt
And you never can tell how close you are.
It may be near when it seems so far:
So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit -
It's when things seem worst that you must not quit.

There was this story of a minor! He liquidated himself, and went prospecting. Found his ideal location, and began digging. He dug and dug, eventually exhausting his energy and money, and abandoned his mine. Another entrepreneur took over his stake, and literally one yard further, struck gold. Do you have, or can you instill the burning desire, to reach your goals? If your answer is yes, try the following. Make your goals achievable. Make them realistic, and make them do-able. Build on your achievements. First stability, then strength, then power. (Become, then do, then have!) Bite sized, digestible, chunks. Set goals in all the six areas of life. ie. Financial, Physical, family, spiritual, social and mental. (Or, whatever works for you.) Make your life amazing!

I wish you every success.
